What is the Treaty of Waitangi?
The Treaty is an agreement, in Māori and English, that was made between the British Crown and about 540 Māori rangatira (chiefs).

Waitangi

Who signed the Treaty of Waitangi?
More than 40 chiefs signed the Māori copy of the Treaty at Waitangi on 6 February 1840.

Why was the Treaty of Waitangi needed?
NZ was not a very safe place to live in.
There was lots of fighting. There were lots of bad men causing trouble for the good people of NZ.
